The Shooting by a Volunteer Police Officer

The news has been buzzing with yet again another police involved shooting.  This time by a 73 year old volunteer deputy in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  This deputy mistakenly used his gun instead of his stun gun.

I have several thoughts about this situation, and this is my space to put them out there.  First, with the way things are, police work being inherently dangerous, I do not believe volunteer officers should be on street patrol, leave that to the professionals, There are places they can serve in the department that could better serve the community.  Second, No reserve officer should ever participate in a sting operation, again leave that to the professionals.

Now I am not one for age discrimination however, Police work is stressful, physical, and requires alertness and use of all faculties.  At his age and training I question the wisdom of his being a gun carrying street patrol officer especially being involved in a sting, and  foot chase.

Speaking to his use of his gun, instead of his stun gun, besides his apparent lack of experience, the danger and stress of the situation plus again his age, I have to wonder about his mental awareness.

Does he have a history of stroke, heart disease, dementia etc..  These are just my thoughts about the situation.

The Shootings!

In the news there have been quite a few shootings that have garnered much attention in the news.  This blog is my opportunity to express my thoughts, mostly on gay issues but anything that I feel strongly about.

I have been thinking about these shootings by police officers, and what appears to be excessive use of force.  Also of shootings by citizens I hear about on the news. I am not going to get into the details of specific cases in this post.  I just want to say here in my opinion, the killings, wounding's, are part of a deeper issue that runs across our society and the world.  It has always been  there under the surface, but in the past decade or two it has become more prevalent. It has a multitude of causations,  race, general prejudices, gang violence, crime in general are talked about in the news, but not any one of these issues is the root of it all.

In my opinion the root cause is a devaluation of human life.  it runs all through our society all the way through our justice system.  To the point that someone kills another human being over a place in line and the charges are dropped, To a person who follows a young man who has done nothing wrong,  and gets into a fight with him kills him in the name of stand your ground, and is acquitted.

It goes on. So we will continue to see this call it a racial issue, blame gangs, drugs, police overstepping authority... the root is the devaluation of life.

Monday Medley: A Charlie Brown Christmas - Christmas Time is Here Song

A Charlie Brown Christmas tradition.  I have watched many of the Charlie Brown Holiday programs for years, along with Rudolph, and frosty.  One of my favorite Christmas movies is the original Miracle on 34th Street, followed by It's a Wonderful Life.  I also have enjoyed the Santa Claus movies with Tim Allen. I hope you enjoy the season.

IT'S VETERANS DAY

The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, was supposed to the end of the war to end all wars.  Well so much for that!  So this day is set aside to honor all who have and do serve our country in the military.  I thank you for your service in protecting the freedoms we have and share.

As a child, on this day my father, who was a navy Veteran of WWI and I always put the flag out front of our house.  It was a tradition I have continued.  Though in an apartment its a garden flag.

To all the Veterans,  I thank you

Monday Medley: Let It Be

Today I feature another song sung by John Legend (I am a fan)  but also Alicia Keys.  They sang this together at the tribute for the Beatles.  There is significance to this song, in the words,  "whispering words of wisdom Let it be"  Do you have something in your life, your heart and mind today or this week you should just let it be?

Phil 4:6-7   "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your request be known to God, and the peace of God which we cannot comprehend will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus our Lord"

My paraphrase,  Worry about nothing, prayer instead and give it to the father, and ho do thoughe will give you peace.  Another way of saying it...give it to God and let it be.

That is not always easy to do though. You just do it as much as you have to in order to let it be.

Monday Medley: John Legend - Made to Love

We were made to love, such a truism! Love is the most important thing in life.  Love for God, he created love. Love of family, friends, love for a life partner.  This is why I think marriage for same sex couples who wish to be married is so important. It is one of the greatest expressions of love on earth.

For Ottowa

Today a tragedy occurred.  A terrorist act took the life of a soldier serving his country. The relative calm and security of a government building was shattered.  I write here tonight to say that I am praying for Canada, and all those who are victims of terrorists

Please join me in remembering and praying!
